Are all electric car chargers the same? We receive this question often here at BMW of San Francisco. While it’s true that all chargers will supply the energy you need to power your EV, there are different types of electric car chargers, and each one charges at different rates of speed and has different specifications. Learn about your options below, and when you’re ready for a new EV in the Serramonte area, be sure to explore our latest models, like the BMW i5.
From parking garages to the roads of South San Francisco to your own garage, you can find different types of electric car chargers. But are all electric car chargers the same? They all work in the same basic way but differ in how fast they charge your EV. Let’s delve into the different types of electric car chargers:
Using a standard 120-volt outlet, Level 1 chargers have a charging speed of three to five miles per hour. While this is the slowest of all three options, it’s the most convenient–120-volt outlets are common in most homes–and it is especially ideal for plug-in hybrid EVs because their batteries are smaller. However, if you have an all-electric vehicle or do a lot of driving, a Level 1 charger may not meet your power demands.
With a charging rate of anywhere from 12 to 80 miles per hour, Level 2 chargers are considerably faster than Level 1 chargers. You can find these systems at many public charging stations and have one installed in your home garage. Be aware, however, that Level 2 chargers require a 240-volt outlet on a dedicated circuit, so they should only be installed by professionals.
Level 3 chargers, also known as DC Fast Chargers, are the speediest option, boasting a charging rate of three to 20 miles per minute. They utilize an alternating current and require significantly higher voltage than Level 1 or Level 2, which is why you can only access them at dedicated stations. The average home doesn’t have the power supply to support Level 3 charging, but when you’re out and about on Pacifica roads and beyond, Level 3 can get your EV charged up and back in action with little downtime.
So, are all electric car chargers the same? Yes and no.
