The 2016 BMW Z4 roadster balances comfort with a sporty ride, a difficult task for many vehicles. Available in three distinct models, the Z4 sDrive35i is the mid-level trim in the lineup.
The 2016 BMW Z4 sDrive35i carries over from last year essentially unchanged. Sport seats are now standard and some of the standard and optional equipment pieces have been reshuffled. This is especially true among the exterior paint color options.
As mentioned above, buyers have three models to choose from: the sDrive28i, the mid-level sDrive35i and the premium sDrive35is. They differentiate from each other primarily by their engines. The sDrive28i gets a turbo-four while the two other models get distinctive V-6 turbos. The Z4 sDrive35i’s engine is rated at both 300 horsepower and torque. The output is channeled to the rear wheels through a seven-speed manumatic transmission. According to the automotive experts at Edmunds, the Z4 sDrive35i can hit 60 mph from a stop in 5.0 seconds.
The EPA rates the BMW Z4 sDrive35i an estimated 17 mpg in city driving, 24 mpg on the highway and 20 in combined driving. Note all Z4s use premium fuel.
As befitting a luxury sports brand, the BMW Z4 is generously equipped. Standard safety features found in all three models include six airbags, adaptive brake lights, anti-lock disk brakes, and stability and traction control systems. BMW Ultimate Service is also standard. This perk provides scheduled maintenance and complimentary roadside assistance. Also standard is BMW’s Assist eCall system. With it, owners can request emergency service with a touch of a button. eCall also performs other functions like automated crash notification.
The Z4 sDrive35i basically builds on the sDrive28i. The sDrive35i replaces the lower model’s 17-in. wheels with larger ones, and gets genuine leather upholstery in lieu of the sDrive28i’s premium vinyl. Otherwise, the standard creature comforts include automated and adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and column setup, audio and phone connectivity via Bluetooth, and eight-way powered sport seats.
A Premium Sound package is available for audiophiles. Buyers can also equip their BMW Z4 sDrive35 with different wheels, a different hardtop, and front and rear parking sensors.
